Project Clean-Up
I’m still here and I’m still code crunching away. I’m doing some websites for a couple of friends so I’ve been brushing up on my css and html skills. I’d only dabbled a bit in the css previously so there’s been a bit of a steep learning curve there. That on top of all the other website related stuff I’ve been doing at the moment. I envisage that I’ll be doing it for a while to come as well.
I’ve also been doing a bit of woodwork and cleaning up around the place. I have several “abandoned” projects I’m now managing to get out of the way slowly but surely. This pleases Amy no end I should add – mainly because she’s the recipient of some pretty cool “household” type items….and some for her studio too. I just still have quite a bit of exotic timber about the place and it’s finally time to clear some of that clutter. With this in mind I have plans for some home made Christmas presents this year (as I alluded to in my last post).
The latest thing I’m working on is a small art chest for Amy. It was supposed to be an art chest for Dominique when we were together (I started working on it 10 or 11 years ago) but the damn thing was just so overly complicated with mechanics and secret compartments that I just didn’t get that far with it.. I found all of the components upstairs in a box last year and brought it down to show Amy. I asked her if she wanted me to finish it for her (as most girls get a bit funny when you mention ex girlfriends) and she thought it was a pretty cool idea.
Originally the chest was to have a carved dragon on it, complete with clawed feet and fold out wings. There were hieroglyphs along the outside which held clues as to what was inside. For instance I had a worm gear mechanism which, when turned the right way with a clock key, allowed for a secret panel to pop out from the inside of the lid and revealed a hidden switch. When you turned the switch on the dragon’s eyes would light up. It was a complicated setup but it was basically all ready to go as far as the design of it was concerned. Sadly the chest will no longer have this feature but it WILL be finished sometime in the next few week or so – as opposed to NEVER getting done.
It was also a project that I was going to do entirely with veneers and substrates but I’ve since decided that’s all gonna take to long now so I’m going to used solid timber for the drawers instead. I might take a few “work in progress” shots and put them up on here.
Sometime next year I want to get cracking on a Hurdy Gurdy for Ken……And possibly a guitar or bass just to use up some of the spare parts I have kicking around here. I have wanted to make a semi-acoustic jazz guitar for a while now?
I’ve also always wanted to make an 8 string bass but, as I no longer play bass, I’m not sure if I will or not? then again I could always sell it or give it away to someone?
Mmmmm, now who do I know who would want an 8 string bass?
