A Possible Foray Into Podcasting

I’ve been hearing the word “Podcasting” for a while now – probably for about eight months or so? Not being in the possession of an iPod (damnit!) I never thought too much about it – that is until this past week. For those of you out there who are unfamiliar with the term, Podcasting is now the “new fad” on the internet. It’s basically a radio show, usually in mp3 format, that can be automatically downloaded directly to your iPod or mp3 player – or even your computer for that matter – for you to listen to at any time of the day or night. Your choice! It’s essentially “radio on demand” and, for the most part, it’s free. It allows virtually anyone to have their own radio show that could, potentially, reach thousands – if not millions – of people around the world. Even the real radio stations are a little wary of Podcasting and some of them have begun their own trials into it.

Of course now that I know a bit more about it I think I wanna try it out!

I was thinking of getting my long time buddy, Adrian in on the scene. He already has a real life radio show on Saturday nights where he plays and talks about movie scores. He’s been doing community radio here in Melbourne for a number of years now but, up until last Monday, he’d never even heard of the term Podcasting. Needless to say though he is interested.

Adrian and I have been doing “projects” ever since we were young kids. First we cut out cartoon characters from the newspaper and swapped them. I think that was when we were about four or five. From there we “recorded” our own radio shows on tape, as well as act out other scripts – with sound effects and music included! We also got a little into film and storyboarding. And a little while after that we “published” our own monthly soft porn magazine for about a year…..but let’s not dwell on that too much!

Of course in the 1980′s we got into rock and roll and played in various bands until my ego got too big (and very stupid). One of those bands was called “Road Menace” and we played for a while in the local pubs and clubs. Another, very much shorter band experience, was called “Fat Texta” (a texta is like a felt tipped marker pen here in Australia). It was very stupid and very much fun to do, but it only lasted a mere day in a rehearsal studio! From that one day though came many memories. The songs were stupid and immature and called things like “I’m So F**king Depressed”, “I’m OK. F**k You!” and “Brown Bear”. Not brain surgery granted, but fun nonetheless.

The original idea was that these “songs” would be presented as part of a radio show hosted by a couple of characters called “Freddie” and “Jason”. Now the Freddie in question was supposed to be Freddie Kruger and Jason was Jason Vorhees (or whoever he is from those “Friday The 13th” films). Basically I was Freddie and Adrian was Jason. Now this is a decade or so before the whole “Freddie Verses Jason” film debacle!

Anyhow, thoughts of the “would be ” radio show flooded back to me with the whole Podcasting idea. I quickly realized though that (a) The Freddie and Jason idea was very, very limited and (b) They’re both copyrighted anyhow. Half an hour to an hour a week of silliness from Adrian and I though might – just might – be entertaining enough for other people to listen to? We might throw in the occasional review, interview and song in with the mix as well – or anything else we think of for that matter? It’s well worth a shot anyhow?

So with this in mind we’re both gearing up for a session or two of testing equipment, ideas and other such things. We’ll set up a “studio” at Adrian’s house and see how it goes? If we figure that we’ve got anything half decent then we might go ahead with it all.

It can’t hurt, can it?

Sounds fascinating… now… even though I don’t own a Mac… I want an iPod darn it! grrr….. All these gadgets and so little money.

Well I kinda wanted one for a while but I had too much music to put on one – apart from the iPod Photo – plus they were a little expensive. I saw them in the store the other day and they’d come down in price quite a bit. They’re also tiny and cute to boot I should add!

  3. Doing my own radio show (College FM) in the early eighties was a great experience. Hunting down the song line-up, finding the album, cueing up the song…I do all of that now with CD’s and for some reason the idea of an iPod doesn’t hold much allure for me…but, I’m more than ready to see what you could put out with it…get working, boy.

Well it would be good to be able to access every song you’ve ever owned and then play them in the car or when you’re jogging, cycling, riding the train or just laying out on the grass in the sunshine, wouldn’t it?

Actually scratch that “riding the train” bit if you’re in the Big Apple. It seems that theft of iPods on trains is rife in New York City.

I have also been thinking about it, not sure if my voice would be something others want to really hear or not… ;) I saw heard about it probably about a year ago… I guess I will check here to see what kind of experience you have.

Well we’re a little slow on the progress of this so far but it’s still happening and in the works.
