Food n’ Stuff – An Observation
For some reason I’ve developed some very strange eating habits lately. The habits are good – for the most part anyhow. They’re just strange!
For instance, unless I’m at my parents I don’t think I’ve had a “proper” meal since Amy’s been gone? By this I mean something that’s fully prepared and served up – although, now I think about it, tuna casserole would be the one type of meal that is fully prepared beforehand. For the most part though I’ve had half-assed meals cooked or prepared sporadically.
Most of what I’m eating is vegetables – carrots, sprouts, broccoli etc. – and raw at that. I just prefer some raw vegetables to cooked ones. I found out a couple of years ago that I was apparently one of the “one in eight people” who can really taste the absolute bitterness of Brussels sprouts? Until then I just thought that they tasted crap to everyone but apparently they don’t? Most people can’t even taste the bitterness at all? I love them raw, but cooked….eccchhh! Something my mum has been doing lately with me is to leave the sprouts uncooked and put them on my plate with the rest of my meal or, sometimes, on a side dish. One thing I also discovered about them (just the other week in fact) is that if you eat one and then take a swig of Coke, or Pepsi, it starts burning your damn mouth out for some reason? Well it does for me anyhow. I am a little weird after all! I mean I’m the guy who eats raw lemons until my tongue and mouth bleeds (cause it hurts like hell after that). Then again I haven’t really done that for a couple of years.
I’ve also been having salad vegetables (which of course would be raw anyway). I kinda just “graze” on these at around about meal times and then cook the meat (if I have it) either earlier or later – but hardly at the same time. Like if I was going to have roast chicken for dinner I’d roast the chicken and then start serving it up, and AFTERWARDS I’d cook the peas, corn, carrots or whatever and eat them separately (erm, no….I don’t mean eat them one at a time here). This usually means the “eating period” can last an hour or so.
I’ve been eating enough dairy products – mainly milk, yogurt and cheese – as well as drinking good amounts of water. When I eat meat it’s usually poultry and fish, with some red meat. I’ve cut back severely on soda – I was just having too much of it! I do have the occasional ginger beer though. Never used to like the stuff but the last two girls in my life loved it so I started drinking it too. I think when you’re a kid your taste buds are just so “hyper sensitive” that any strong flavor tastes foul. As you grow up you start to kill your taste buds off with spices, salt, curries and other stuff and a lot of the food that was just too much for you as a kid starts to actually taste good!
I’ve also been exercising more, which is good. Well yeah I know, that goes without saying due to the fact that Amy’s not here and things still need to get done, but I meant riding the exercise bike mainly. I’m trying to be “good” and it also helps to keep warm in this household!
Oh, but I still eat M&M’s every so often!
You’re an inspiration to me. I get stuck in a cycle of feeling sorry for myself. I want to start walking daily again and drinking more water. I will use our bike more too. I had been, but with the warmer weather it fell to the wayside. I’m really proud of you and it’s good to hear what you’ve been up to via this blog. Yes, keep warm..I am thinking of you daily.
love,
Amy (your wifling)
