Meme Me NOT!

For a while now – well, about a month really – I’ve not known “exactly” what a meme was, what it did, how you used it or anything about it actually. Over the past couple of days I’ve found out more about them and I want to categorically say right now PLEASE, NO-ONE EVER SEND ME ONE OF THESE FREAKING THINGS!!!!

Actually I’ll take that back – you can send them….just don’t expect me to do anything about them because I won’t. I don’t have the time and/or the inclination whatsoever to complete one of these hideous things. To me they’re one step up from spam, or at least those crappy forwards that people send you when they can’t be bothered to write you a REAL email!

Don’t get me wrong, these things have their place and I know that a lot of people really love them. I also know that some of them are quite funny, imaginative, creative, interesting and cool – but to tell you the truth I DON’T CARE! Even if I do laugh at the occasional meme or forwarded email I’d just rather not have to deal with it at all.

I have ABSOLUTELY NO INTEREST in how many DVD’s I have in my collection. I have EVEN LESS INTEREST in how many DVD’s YOU have in YOUR collection. After all, you’re hardly gonna invite me around for a movie night now, are you? And I don’t even have a DVD player! OK, well I do in two of the computers here, but it’s hardly practical to huddle around a small computer screen, sitting on hard seats and eating stale popcorn now, is it? Yes, I should get a REAL DVD player, I know – but I’ll get one in my own sweet-assed time!

I’m not really that interested in reading what people’s pet names are. I have no fascination for what their favorite food might be. I cannot be concerned about what their favorite sexual position is and I care not for who they think would be the person most or least likely to respond or send the meme/forward on!

Well OK….I might be interested in what their favorite sexual position is………..But I digress…..

This is not because I HATE you. I don’t hate anyone. It’s just that I get so much of this sorta stuff – forwarded emails particularly – that it takes a long time to process it all. Too long really.

In the case of emails I have to say that I get about 800 of them a week. I’m actually pretty happy with that because for a while there I was getting ABOUT 1200 DAMN EMAILS A WEEK! I dunno why I get less now but I know I don’t miss them!

Many of the emails I get are related to The REG Temple and I have to admit that I do need to respond to them in some way or another. That’s cool and I don’t mind doing it. It’s only when there’s a “buzz” about Richard – as there was when he was tipped to play Doctor Who – that things start to pile up a bit. Basically if I can get back to people within 2-3 weeks then I’m doing alright. Sometimes emails go astray and it takes me several weeks to respond to them. Apologies to those who have waited that long. :-)

One of the unfortunate things is that I still need to go through my “spam” folder just to make sure that legitimate emails don’t end up there. It happens quite a bit but usually it’s either REG related stuff or emails from eBay (every so often I get crazy and sell a bunch of stuff).

Now maybe there’s more to memes than I’m giving them credit for – I can accept that cause sometimes I do miss the plot and go off on a tangent. From what I’ve seen in the past couple of days though I think I’ve got a fair idea of what they’re all about.

Rant over. Please resume your normal viewing. Thank you.

Ok, ok. :-) There are A TINY FEW memes on my blog, but I marked them as such and you may skip them (official licence to you). :-)
I do see your point – in fact I am not a real fan of memes myself (not yet sure about the pronounciation of the word, even). Memes come in handy when you have no real content of your own to publish (then we just shouldn´t, should we?) and may help deteriorate the quality of a blog. You are quite right.
Where I do see a point in memes, nevertheless:
    - they help you find a start when you do not know how to blog on some days
    - they make you tell some things about yourself, that you otherwise might not tell – help you readers get a picture of you (although very often this is about petty details, you are right, and I can understand why you do not really want to be informed how many DVDs Marchal or Milktea or Annie or whoever have in their possession, there is tendency to go from the irrelevant to the trivial and banal, no doubt). And yet… Perhaps it depends a bit on your personal interest in reading a certain blog, as well: do you want information, emotional contact, entertainment, thought provocation, voyeurism, coming to know an individual – I think we approach blogs with very different interests which may change from blog to blog, from day to day, don´t we?
    - memes are one tiny tool in community building, as they are passed on and handed over, so we touch somehow and get in contact – perhaps just a pretense to say hello, how are you…

Havin said all this – and having forgotten some other points I had a vague idea of mentioning when I started out :-) – I can very well understand your point. Worse than being irrelevant and trivial memes (by their very nature as a mass phenomenon) can take away a blog´s individuallity.

OK, you will not be tagged by me (big grin).
    Kind regards and hugsl

I understand your discontent. Meme’s can be a distinctly uninteresting part of a blog, except perhaps by the fact that you can see what the blogger has or likes. Purely categorical. Purely unpersonal. Purely not for me. Nice blog!

I’m participating on June 14th in International Weblogger’s Day. Are you?

Marchal – I don’t mind other people having them on their sites. Actually some of them are quite funny to read and I can see the point of having them from time to time if you’re stuck for a post. That actually makes sense, somewhat. I’m just not going to personally participate in them though, that’s all.

Meme – as in “theme”, if I understand it rightly?

kines – Thanks. Visit anytime. I’m not sure if I’ll participate in International Weblogger’s Day? I guess if I post then I’ve participated? :-)

Or do I actually need to go and see somebody?

I should add that there must’ve been something in the collective ether yesterday as I’ve since read another three blogs with posts dedicated to memes – all posted on the same day as my post!

Does this mean that I’ve accidently memed????

  5. Marchal says:

Eeeks, I guess yes, you have memed. :-)
BTW International Weblogger’s Day has quite a touch of Meme on it, as well, hasn´t it? :-)

  6. Cameron says:

    Just a touch, yes.
